Our Last Afternoon Talk of 2025 – Fiona Wilson SSA

We are excited about our last Afternoon Talk of 2025 on 1st December. The guest speaker this month will be one of our very own artist members, Fiona Wilson SSA, a professional artist who works with a variety of materials and techniques, to produce richly textured, multi-layered monotype prints, drawings and paintings.

Fiona finds inspiration in collected stories from her far away travels, and seeks to capture the essence of different cultures and perspectives, translating them into vibrant, expressive imagery through print and paint. Inspired by visits to exotic destinations, she embraces bold colour as a counterbalance to the often grey West of Scotland, where she has lived most of her life. She has recently been developing a new series of landscape paintings and prints using sketches made while on campervan trips in the North West of Scotland.

Fiona will be bringing an array of her sketchbooks from her vast collection, including travel sketch journals, which document her adventures to exotic places, in drawings collage and words. She will also be showing us her studio journals which will give us a rare insight in the way an artist uses sketchbooks to work through her many ideas for the final artworks. She plans to have enough time to take a sketch idea into a larger drawing for a true insight into this artist’s experimental and intuitive way of working.

Fiona promises to bring plenty of her sketchbooks to look at over the coffee break too, so you can have a close up look at the rich detail on the pages, and hopefully take away some tips and inspiration to try travel sketching yourself! The Afternoon talks are held at the Kelvinside Hillhead church hall on Observatory Rd, Glasgow. Doors open at 1pm and the speaker will commence at 1.15 Tea and coffee served at the conclusion of the demonstration.
